HPE Aruba JL308A 40G QSFP+ LC BiDi Transceiver
Overview
The HPE Aruba JL308A is a high-performance QSFP+ (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable Plus) optical transceiver designed to deliver reliable 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. It is engineered for enterprise data centers and campus network aggregation layers where upgrading network speed is critical. This module specifically addresses the challenge of migrating from 10GbE to 40GbE infrastructure by enabling the reuse of existing duplex multimode fiber (MMF) cabling, significantly reducing the capital expense associated with a complete fiber plant overhaul. Its primary function is to convert electrical data signals into optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables, providing high-bandwidth links between switches or from switches to other core networking equipment. At the core of this transceiver is Bi-Directional (BiDi) optical technology. Unlike traditional 40G transceivers that require eight fiber strands (four for transmitting and four for receiving), BiDi technology uses two different wavelengths on each fiber strand to transmit and receive data simultaneously over a standard two-strand LC duplex MMF cable. This innovative approach allows network administrators to achieve a fourfold increase in data throughput without installing new, higher-density fiber cabling. This capability is invaluable in environments where pulling new fiber is cost-prohibitive or physically disruptive, ensuring a streamlined and economical upgrade path. Engineered for seamless integration, the JL308A is a hot-swappable module that installs into any QSFP+ compliant port, such as those found on the Aruba 2930M and other 40GbE-capable switch series. Its plug-and-play design simplifies deployment in top-of-rack or end-of-row switch uplinks within a data center, or for interconnecting aggregation switches in a campus backbone. Management is handled through the host switch’s command-line interface (CLI) or network management platform, which can monitor the transceiver’s operational parameters via Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) for enhanced reliability and diagnostics.
