HPE JH231A X142 40G QSFP+ MPO SR4 Transceiver
Overview
The HPE X142 40G QSFP+ MPO SR4 is a high-performance, short-range optical transceiver designed to provide reliable 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity within modern data centers. It addresses the critical need for high-bandwidth, low-latency links between servers, storage arrays, and network switches, solving density and performance challenges at the server access and aggregation layers. This module is engineered for deployment in environments where speed and signal integrity over short distances are paramount, such as connecting top-of-rack switches to servers or linking switches within a single data center row. It offers a straightforward and cost-effective path to upgrade existing 10GbE infrastructure to 40GbE without requiring a complete overhaul of the fiber optic cabling plant. At its core, this transceiver utilizes proven 850nm Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) technology and is optimized for Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF). This technical foundation enables robust data transmission across four parallel 10Gbps lanes, aggregating to a total of 40Gbps. Its compliance with the 40GBASE-SR4 standard ensures interoperability with a wide range of networking equipment. The use of a standard MPO connector simplifies high-density patching and ensures a secure physical connection, which is critical in maintaining uptime in production environments. Digital Diagnostics Monitoring (DDM) is also supported, providing real-time access to operating parameters for proactive network management and troubleshooting. Designed for operational simplicity and efficiency, the module features a hot-swappable Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP+) design. This allows network administrators to install or replace the transceiver without powering down the host switch or disrupting network services, maximizing uptime and simplifying maintenance. Its primary role is to serve as the physical interface for high-speed links, typically extending up to 100 meters over OM3 MMF or 150 meters over OM4 MMF. Management is handled by the host device’s command-line interface (CLI) or network management platform, where the transceiver is instantly recognized and configured.
